The Moth--Details

The presentation on Oct. 14 is a time to enjoy both video and audio stories that have truly touched many who've already heard them. This is a national project that started out very simply on the porch of novelist George Dawes Green who shared stories with friends. Each story is from a different person and the hour spent in this presentation will likely leave you with pleasant memories. You'll also likely want to return on Oct. 28 when more Moth stories will be shared.

Big Library Read

On Oct. 13, join us for our second "Big Library Read", a global reading program and movement that supports the availability of eBooks in local libraries. Beginning on Monday, Oct. 13, our eBook collection will feature Andrea Portes' "Anatomy of a Misfit", a witty yet moving novel that follows Anika as she navigates high school social life and redefines herself in the midst of unexpected tragedy. It is a story that will appeal to both young adults and older adults alike.

From Oct. 13 to Oct. 28, this eBook can be downloaded and read simultaneously by all of our patrons without counting against the normal checkout limit. We want to see how many people can read this title at the same time! To participate, simply download "Anatomy of a Misfit" from our eBook catalog ( between Oct. 13 and 28. By participating, you voice your support for eBooks in local libraries.

Need help downloading? Attend our "Getting Started with eBooks" class on Monday, Oct. 13 at 10:30. We will help you download "Anatomy of a Misfit" as well as show you how to access the rest of our eBook collection.

People Make the Library

One of the things that makes the Beach Library a special place are the people who watch over, care about, add to and look for those touches that reflect the blessings and benefits of what caring is all about. In a media world where we are bombarded with sensational happenings and evil that humans do to one another, it's easy to be cynical and think the world is going to hell On the other hand, it is the everyday caring that truly makes this a special place.

Three events happened this week that help one to see why this library is what it is. (1) A gentleman noticed that someone coming into the library left a solid trail of sand on the stairs. He located the dustpan and broom on the first floor near the dollhouse display, and swept up most of the sand (2) Another gentleman let us know during construction that he had a seahorse that was worthy of being added to the collection. We said we'd welcome it but could not store or display it in the interim. He remembered, and now with construction completely done, stopped by and said he'd bring in the seahorse The next day he brought in the seahorse with pride, and it is now in the seashell collection along with the other seahorses. (3) A filmmaker was in the library about six months ago and was impressed with the dolls of the world collection. He thought the dolls from Czech Republic could be even more authentic and brought in a pair with genuine full costumes. They are on display in the collection.

Artist of the Month

On display in the Library Commons is our featured artist, W. Jeffrey Mudgett. His photographs invite attention for a variety of reasons. He moved to the Beach in 1968 and has been an architect in Fort Myers for the past 24 years. He holds a Bachelor's of Design in Architecture and a Masters of Architecture, and has worked for architects, planners and landscape architects in California, Florida and Italy. You'll notice all three of these locations in his photographs.

As an architect, he tries to share his sense of awe in the amazing things man has built over the past 3,000 years, and looks for their engagement with patterns of nature, time and light.

As a traveler, he tries to catch a piece of the unique character of places, catching something that not everyone will easily see.

As an artist, he tries to combine all of these things with drama, humor, criticism or ambiguous whiffs of a story.

All of Jeff's images are taken with either a hand held 35mm film camera or full frame digital SLR camera. The film photographs are custom llfochrome prints from color film positives.

Photographs are on display through the month. On Oct. 15, you have a chance to meet the artist between 4 and 6 p.m. in the Library Commons. You can discuss particular photos or approaches.

The library is blessed with volunteers who do some of the regular cleaning on some of our busy days. One regular cleaner who concentrates on doing vacuuming on each floor is gone for three weeks. If you'd be able to work a few hours in your schedule for this vacuuming during these weeks, please see me for details. Thank you.

Rustic Driftwood Display

The works of Phil Rivera are on display In a low case on the second floor, a corner of the Library Commons on the third floor, and as additions to the Sand Gallery. Phil works in specialized carpentry and with his talent and insight creates art and furniture from rustic driftwood. Stop and look at the variety of items on display in all three locations. You can easily linger for awhile as Phil has included explanatory signs that make his Felipe's Creations even more meaningful.

Library Hours

When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; on Wednesday between 9 and 7; and on Saturday between 9 and 1. We look forward to seeing you.
