Water, water, everywhere: How much should I drink?

Much of the body is made up of water about 60 percent in the average adult. Your body needs water to function properly, lubricate joints, remove waste and maintain temperature among other things. When you drink enough water you think better, feel better and look better. Your body is always losing water through sweat, tears, breathing and going to the bathroom, so it is important to make sure that you are taking enough in.

How much is enough? A good general rule is to drink half your body weight in ounces every single day. There are some conditions that increase your need for water, such as hot environments, pregnancy and breastfeeding, exercise, and certain diseases.

If you're not getting enough water you may notice symptoms such as dry mouth, dry skin, muscle cramps, food cravings, headaches, fatigue, thirst, decreased urine output or dark urine, constipation, dizziness, or confusion. Often, when people are exercising, they will reach for a sports drink for rehydration. Unfortunately the carbohydrate content in these drinks will slow gastric emptying and intestinal absorption, thus delaying rehydration.

Unless you're participating in an hour of moderate to high intensity training, sports drinks are unnecessary, and water is still the better choice.
