Author Kathleen Norris lives in a small town in South Dakota, far from any major metropolis, far from airports, and even far from other small towns. She and her husband, the poet David Dwyer, have made this town their home since the mid-1970s. They have learned to live with extreme manifestations of nature. She sees connections between living on the Plains and living in a monastery with respect to honoring nature's rhythms, learning to wait and how to sit in silence.

Consider her Amazing Grace a Vocabulary of Faith (LP 230.02 NOR and in regular print in Religion Christianity Norris) and The Cloister Walk (Religion Christianity Norris).

Men and Family

The father in Rosellen Brown's timely Before and After (LP BRO) struggles to make sense of an act of violence perpetrated by his son and to navigate the troubled atmosphere of family and community life in the wake of this violence.

The Reiser family has lived in their small, peaceful town in New Hampshire for 11 years. For a variety of reasons, they are still outsiders. On the surface, the family seems fairly typical: the father sculpts and cooks, the mother has a pediatrics practice, the 17-year-old son goes to school and tests his parents' limits, and the 13-year-old daughter shifts between happy-go-lucky and teen angst.

Consider also Tender Mercies (also at LP BRO). Both works examine relationships in the aftermath of tragedy--in this case, a boating accident.

Book Discussion Group

The group is discussing Whiskey & Charlie by Annabel Smith on July 21. What led the author to explore this particular aspect of family life was her father having a falling out with his bother, which resulted in them not speaking for a decade. She wanted to understand how two people who had grown up together could reach a point where they didn't speak for ten years.

This novel is also structured around the phonetic alphabet, with one chapter for each letter. The group is going to have fun with the possibilities.

Growing in Popularity or Not?

Those who think the use of e-Books indicates the demise of the printed book may need to reassess. There's true delight still to be gotten in leafing through many hardcover or paperback books before arranging them on bookshelves, knowing that over the years to come they will assume that recognizable atmosphere that is characteristic of well loved books.

The physical book lover doesn't need to fear the e-Books since it is merely an alternative way to read. E-Books, eReaders and accessories, books, audiobooks and all other written matter wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the technology of the alphabet, vocabulary and language itself. It's our thirst for information and wisdom which will keep us looking at books in all their formats.

Added Titles

Beachcombers Bookstore on the third floor is open Monday to Friday, 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. More titles have been sent to the bookstore so enjoy your browsing.

The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend, written and illustrated by Dan Santat, won the Randolph Caldecott Medal for most distinguished American picture book for children.

If you have a few hours to assist, I am looking for someone in July to assist in keeping the landscape in tip-top shape. Your volunteer time can be limited to just the month of July. Fill out a Landscape Volunteer application at the staff assistance station on the first floor and I'll call you to arrange details. Thanks.

The thought process that says people who commit terrorism in the name of Islam are fringe elements who misinterpret Islamic texts is a state of denial, says author Hirsi Ali of Infidel (Biography, Hirsi). She argues that the actual doctrine within Islam instructs Muslims to behave in this way. She added that change is never a call by the masses. Read her discussion as she is articulate and opens doors.

In the aftermath of the mass shooting at Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, it was saddening to learn that the public librarian who served more than three decades with the Charles County Public Library was among the fatally injured.
