October 27, 2016
Melissa Schneider - Editor (mschneider@breezenewspapers.com) , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

The Salty Dog Gallery and Gifts, 1901 Estero Blvd., is a fun local shop that offers unique, one-of-a-kind, creative, artistic treasures for the home and office. However, owners Peter and Carla Pine are always adding to the fun of their shop, and enjoy incorporating their love of animals into what they do. After all, their puppy mascot, Brady, is leader of the pack!

Celebrating a month-long 10-year anniversary, the trio is hosting a very fun photoshoot fund-raiser for a local Havanese dog rescue that's all about the pets Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A professional photographer will be on site that day, complete with lots of fun props, hats and other wild items, to make your special pet photo a truly memorable one. All pet owners (and even non-pet owners) are welcome to stop by anytime during the day to see all of the lively photo fun that is to be had.

Owner Carla Pine and her pup, Brady, are ready to host a very special pet-photo benefit at her Salty Dog Gallery and Gifts Saturday, from 9:30 a.m to 5 p.m. Enjoy pet photo fun, raffles and prizes, all to help a local pet rescue. Photo by MELISSA SCHNEIDER.

"Our Saturday benefit is part of our 10-year anniversary celebration. We are going to try to do something special every month to celebrate our 10 years in business and we would like to give back to our community in some way each time," said Carla Green, co-owner of the shop, along with her husband, Peter. "And what's more fun than pets? Maybe having many together! People who own pets make friends with total strangers because our pets force us to be out and to be social. Our benefit is going to be lots of fun for pets and their owners we will be raffling off several items, have fun photo props, one of our local island sketch artists (Chet) will be here to sketch pet pictures, we'll have plenty of treats and refreshments to keep pets hydrated and happy, and our upstairs neighbors, Hoosiers in Paradise, is welcoming our pets and humans upstairs for lunch specials that day."

The photoshoot is open to any pets, whether it's cats, dogs, snakes, birds, turtles, hamsters, lizards, iguanas or goldfish just be sure you have the proper cage/leash/fishbowl to ensure your pet's safety and others there, and although walk-ins are welcome, those planning to attend with a pet are asked to try to RSVP ahead of time to ensure photo space/time is available, and so the little shop isn't full of too many pets at one time, which can just get downright hairy.

"We are asking for a $10 donation per pet for the photoshoot, to go to the Havanese Rescue. The photographer will be sending all the pictures to you via email or mailed CD, which you can use at your disposal, and have them printed anywhere or at home on your own printer," Carla said. "And, 20 percent of our sales that day will be donated to the Rescue, as well. We are also offering our Salty Dog T-shirts for 50 percent off."

About the Salty Dog Gallery and Gifts

The Salty Dog continues to expand and add fun, unique items and classes to their island shop roster.

"We have been very blessed with 10 years of success. We, like other small business owners, had our good times and our bad times, but we always stay positive and try to find ways to keep people coming," Carla said. "I have been at this for 10 years and realized I had to re-invent myself to stay relevant to the trends and needs of our customers. The store has really changed from 10 years ago."

Along with beautiful, custom-painted furniture that fits many decors, Carla's added chalk-style paint for the DIY-ers, and even offers classes to teach people how to use the amazing product. She's also added Company C area rugs to her inventory, "beautiful wool rugs that have amazing colors and styles, and I offer Trade Winds and Bramble Furniture."

She often has specially created, artist-designed furniture available, as well. "We are so lucky to have so many amazing artists on our beautiful island who have found their way into my shop. We do a lot of re-purposing of furniture with chalk paint, and right now, I have several one-of-a-kind pieces that I had commissioned. If you are looking for that one very unique piece, come in and see these pieces. My store is small, but it is jam-packed with gorgeous pieces. I am thankful that everyday I get to go to my shop, that I love with my sweet dog, Brady, and my husband. I get to spend my day doing what I love, meeting new people and making friends. It is really a tough life looking out my door and seeing our beautiful beach."

Aside from stopping into the shop, you can often see Carla set up at the Santini Plaza Farmers Markets every Tuesday, kicking back up in November, showing off the beauty of the chalk-paint, as well as a new product she's offering, leather paint/preserver. "I knew that most people are not familiar with chalk-style paint, so I thought I would give it a try. Last season was a huge success and reminded many about our shop and all of the wonderful products we carry. I'm looking forward to this year's farmer's markets, as well."

Interested in learning about chalk-paint and want to create something with it??Join Carla during one of her upcoming classes, where you get to take home the product you create that day. "I really love hosting the classes in chalk-style painting, showing you how to redo your own furniture," Carla said. "I've loved to painted since I was a little girl and I still love to paint. Hosting the classes lets me pass on a wonderful craft that so many find they enjoy. Come by and create something with me!"
