Pet Pals rescue column: Week of March 22

March 22, 2017
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

A clean bill of health!

Daphne is healthy again! After a short bout of ringworm from being abandoned on the street, she is now fully recovered and can join a happy puppy family. She's so sweet, so cute, and just a happy and lovable puppy with sweet eyes and a gentle soul. She weighs 16 pounds and just 4 months old. We think she will be around the 30-pound range full grown. We would love for her to have a great home with another dog so she can enjoy her puppy life after what she has gone through. Daphne is now in foster care with 3 other dogs and she is having a blast, ready for her new home. She is healthy and has been cleared by the vet. If you'd like to meet this cute girl, please call Helena, 239-272-6633.

Joey: A last-minute rescue

Article Photos

As you know we like to pull pets from Shelters, generally the ones that no one else wants. We have rules, of course the main being that the dog has to be dog friendly. We receive at least 15 pleas from the Shelter every day and need to make difficult choices. We look for dogs who were brought to the Shelter in a "normal stage" and then got a bad behavior due to the harsh environment. These are the guys we like to pull and 95 percent of the time, they are fabulous and should not have been there.

This is the case for Joey, who comes from a high-kill Shelter. He is a black Labrador Retriever who was found as a very emaciated stray. He needed to be pulled by a Rescue that day or he would be euthanized. Our volunteer, Connie went to meet him. (People often ask why the Shelter doesn't hold pets longer, but with such an overpopulation, only the ones who are easily adoptable and in high demand will make it. Those with any medical issue, scared or injured will be euthanized. It's heartbreaking but until we spay and neuter all pets, we will have this issue.)

Back to Joey: This gentle guy is full of life and is still pretty young. He has lots of energy and would be great for an active lifestyle. Lots of playtime and fun at the beach! For more information, please call Connie, 561-504-3719.

Won't you meet Touilly?

Touilly still needs a home. This little guy was at the event last Saturday and had such a great spirit! He is not the most attractive boy right now, looks a bit like an armadillo from the back, but he is such a sweetheart and will keep getting better and better. He is a true trooper. He's always happy, and that is the reason he got that name at the Vet.

He is housebroken, loves food and loves his walk. He is about 10 years old and is our little Old Man! We are looking for a permanent home where you give him love and food and we take care of the Vet bills. Want to meet him? Please call 239-281-0739.

Sweet little Foster

Won't you meet Foster, our latest little boy of the bunch! He is currently fostered right here on the beach and such a cute guy when he knows you. He is timid but warms up quickly. We would love for him to have a companion. Foster loves other dogs. He is young and needs to be loved to gain confidence. If you'd like to meet him, please call 239-281-0739.

Benefit yard sale THIS weekend! Come one, come all!

Don't miss an exiting weekend of treasures this weekend March 25 and 26 at 7879 Buccaneer Drive in Laguna Shores subdivision, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bring all your old items so we can resell them for the rescue. This is our one-time big event and would like to help as many pets with the proceeds.

Our vet bills are pretty high and we need all the help we can get. If you would like to bake for our sale, please let us know ASAP and call Jackie, 239-239-851-3490. Come on out and have some fun!

Stay tuned

Next week, we will share some great news with you some of our dogs have recently been adopted. I know you have been wondering what happened to them and we're so excited to share their stories next week!

We need cat colony feeders

We need volunteers to feed cats around the Indian Creek Plaza area. Please consider helping even for a few days or weeks, that would be so helpful. All food is provided. Call Jo for more information, 239-851-6118.

The Rescue's ultimate wish

Our ultimate wish would be for a great Samaritan to gift to the Rescue a property where we could keep a few dogs and cats. Daphne, the little black Mouth Curr, was so sick, she had to stay at the vet for over three weeks, and the vet bill is over $1,000, but there were no other choices, since she was contagious with ringworm. Maybe one day we will get our wish fulfilled. She was worth every penny of it as our other rescues. Thank you for sharing our story and our rescues!

What a great event

Thanks for a great event last Saturday. We had a great time and ate a lot of BBQ. This is one of our favorite events at Santini. Food, fun and spirit. Thanks to Gateway Marina on San Carlos Boulevard for the generosity and The Beacon Bed and Breakfast! Even the weather was great, not too hot not too cold. Perfect!
