LeeTran offering free transport to shelters; Lee shelters open to pets

Lee County declared a mandatory evacuation of the barrier islands, including Fort Myers Beach, this morning. LeeTran is offering free transportation to the open evacuation shelters. Fares are suspended from the Passport and Fixed Route buses. Passengers can board the bus at any stop and then get off at designated shelter transfer locations. At this designated location, another bus is running passengers to the closest open shelter. Lee Tran said in the press release that regular transit services are still running today, but will be significantly delayed. Lee County shelters have expanded to all have pet capacity at this time. East Lee County High School and South Fort Myers High School remain the primary pet-friendly shelters. Here is a list of open and running shelters in Lee County: • East Lee County High School, 715 Thomas Sherwin Ave., Lehigh Acres • Varsity Lakes Middle School, 801 Gunnery Road., Lehigh Acres • Harns Marsh Middle School, 1820 Unice Ave. N., Lehigh Acres • Oak Hammock Middle School, 5321 Tice St., Fort Myers • Island Coast High School, 2125 De Navarra Pkwy., Cape Coral • South Ft. Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Road., Fort Myers • Estero Rec Center, 9200 Corkscrew Palms Road., Estero People staying in the shelters can enter and exit until the weather conditions make exit unsafe.
