Eliminate E-waste!

Keep Lee County Beautiful Tip of the Week

We Americans love our gadgets, and find life difficult without them. That being said, their production and disposal are a growing harm to the environment and our health. We can all do our part to help reduce the impact:

Use products for their entire lifespan. Instead of discarding perfectly functioning products in order to get the latest gadget, consider keeping it longer. If you really can't wait to have that new gadget, consider selling your old product on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or many other available methods.

Consider buying your products in this manner yourself! Previously owned cell phones, computers and cameras save resources (and also save you money!).

Recycle or refill empty ink cartridges for your printer. Getting cartridges refilled saves a lot of money, and many stores such as Staples take empty cartridges to recycle in exchange for rewards.

Give away or donate old, stereos, and television sets. Craigslist and Facebook are also easy places to give away items, which means they won't be sitting on your curb waiting to be picked up. An added bonus is you won't have to carry them there because people will come and take them right from your house. Donating these items also serves charitable causes, such as the many thrift stores in our county, and are also tax deductible saving you money!

If you do place them curbside, Lee County offers residents convenient, responsible recycling of common electronic items such as computers, all components, printers, copiers, scanners, televisions, etc. These items should be placed curbside next to, but separated from, regular garbage. The waste hauler will log electronic equipment and an electronics truck will come within 72 hours to collect. You may also bring electronics to the Topaz Court Solid Waste Annex, 6441 Topaz Court Fort Myers, FL.

Speaking of saving money, consider repairing broken electronic items instead of replacing them.

As always, the best rule to follow is first reduce, secondly reuse, and finally recycle.
