Songwriters at Sunset acoustic concerts return to Lover Key

December 4, 2017
By ANITA FORCE MARSHALL (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Like multiple encores by your favorite band that only leave you wanting more, the Fort Myers Beach Songwriters at Sunset free acoustic concert is back by popular demand. The first performance of the season kicks off at Lovers Key State Park on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. The concert is free with a park entry fee, ($8 for vehicles (2-8 people), $4 for single person in vehicle, $2 for pedestrian/bicyclist).

The Friends of Lovers Key and the Americana Community Music Association, join forces once again to offer the series of monthly free acoustic concerts of all original music this upcoming season. ACMA is a Fort Myers-based organization that promotes local artists who write and sing their own original songs.

"The Songwriters at Sunset concerts are special in that all of the songs played throughout the evening are original acoustic music," said Shelley-Sue Williams, FOLKS spokesperson. "Listeners get to hear the story behind the song and the songwriters share how and where they got the idea for their song with their listeners."

"We have created a listening room atmosphere, where people are respectful of the artists and are actually listening to the stories and the songs. It is always interesting to hear where a song originated from," Williams said. "Listeners can sit in chairs on the shaded gazebo or can bring beach chairs and sit on the sand and of course each concert ends with a fabulous Lovers Key Sunset!"

The Dec. 7 concert will feature four talented Florida musical acts.

Hank Woji and Eileen Kozloff have performed regularly at festivals, concert venues, coffee houses and house concerts throughout the country. They enjoy combining their stellar individual skills into a duo that showcases the best of their talents into a seamless collaborative musical team.

The Reckless Saints (Roy Schneider and Kim Mayfield) play original music self-described as "blue twangled folk and roll." The group is a delightfully diverse blend, ranging from bluesy to ballads, jazzy to folk, bluegrass to rock, while still comfortably fitting under the Americana umbrella. Schneider is a singer-songwriter in the grandest tradition of Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark, and Lyle Lovett, but his voice, songwriting skill, stagecraft, and instrumental talent are all his own. With duo partner Mayfield, they have been touring for years across America and abroad.

Who would enjoy this event?

"Anyone interested in music, the songwriting process, acoustic and Americana music fans, and anyone looking for a relaxing enjoyable evening on the beach," Williams said. "Everyone is always surprised at the quality of the music, and that we have these very talented local musicians in our own backyard."

Be sure to partake in the refreshments that will be available with a donation benefiting FOLKS. It's always advised to arrive early to the park at 8700 Estero Blvd., as you will need time to park your car and ride the tram down the beach. Once you're on the beach, join in the fun in the large gazebo where it is first-come, first-served seating. You may want to bring a beach chair as additional seating is also available on the sand.

Future Songwriters at Sunset concert dates are scheduled for: Jan. 4 and 18, Feb. 1 and 18, March 1 and 18 and April 5 and 18.
