Don’t miss the 8th Annual Putt & Pub Crawl

January 10, 2018
BY ANITA FORCE MARSHALL ( , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Fore! Taking place in the downtown district of Fort Myers Beach from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, is the ever-popular Putt & Pub Crawl. The fun begins with nine local restaurants each creating and setting up their own "goofy golf" hole. Then fun-loving teams of four visit all nine sponsors between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., in search of that perfect score. Each sponsor will also offer prizes, raffles and drink specials.

"Teams can play the holes in any order they wish but, they have to play all nine holes by 4:30 p.m. and turn in their scorecard by 5 p.m. to qualify for prizes," said Denise Monahan, president of the non-profit Friends of Bay Oaks. "The after party is always a lot of fun. This year we expect it to be extra special with music provided by Sheena Brook, our local 'The Voice' celebrity and the dinner is hosted by Texas Tony's."

The after party will be held on Old San Carlos Boulevard on a vacant lot provided by John Richard, giving everyone plenty of room for socializing and talking about the best shots and almost hole in ones.

You may channel Ricky Fowler or Happy Gilmore or Arnold Palmer for your golf attire inspiration. Whatever outfit you wear, get ready for lots of laughs plus award presentations and basket raffles, 50/50 raffle and more.

"The coveted awards are given to the team with the best costume & best team name plus awards for first place, second place and last place," Monahan said. "We are always surprised by the costumes, people really go all out."

This is the eighth year for the Putt & Pub Crawl and each year a "local" cause is chosen as the recipient of the proceeds. In past years, funds have gone to the Little League, Soccer League, PTO, and Alliance for the Arts to name a few.

Cost to participate is $225 per 4 person team.

"This year's event is raising funds for the Friends of Bay Oaks Recreation Center and Pool plus, funds raised will provide improvements such as new computer resources for our Seniors and after school programs, improvements to the little league dugouts, and help with new programs at our community pool," Monahan said. "The Rec Center is the heart of the island, reaching all demographics from youth to seniors, locals and visitors. We are excited to use this event to raise money and raise awareness of the many programs offered at Bay Oaks!

Why is the Putt & Pub Crawl so special? It is local, put on by locals at local restaurants.

"Ninety percent of the 200-plus people attending are locals, our entertainment is by a local artist and, best of all, funds raised support a local cause" Monahan said. "We are so grateful for our generous sponsors: Lahaina Realty, Salty Crab, Mermaid Lounge, Pete's Time Out, PierSide Grill & Famous Blowfish Bar, The Fish House, Matanzas on the Bay, La Ola, Gulfshore Grill & The Cottage, Yucatan Beach Stand, Smokin' Oyster Brewery, and Texas Tony's.

Downtown FMB is ideal for Putt & Pub Crawl because, with more than 200 attendees, it seamlessly accommodates everyone walking and nine different venues easily.

"Every year we have people seeing all the excitement the day of the event and wanting to know how they can sign up," Monahan said. "Since we typically do not allow same day registration, people should get their teams signed up now."

To register for the Putt & Pub Crawl, contact Lahaina Realty, 463-0000 or, or stop by their office at 6035 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach to complete a registration form and drop off a check. Limited amount of teams, so sign up today!
