January 24, 2018
By ANITA FORCE MARSHALL (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

The Friends of Lovers Key is offering a unique twist on an excercise standard.

"Yoga on the Gazebo is a weekly Monday morning yoga program on the gazebo on the beach at Lovers Key State Park" said Shelley-Sue Williams, director/communications chair, FOLKS. "The natural setting of the beach just goes hand in hand with a yoga practice."

The program will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. every Monday until the end of April. The cost is $10 per attendee, plus park admission, (park entry fees are $8 for vehicles (2-8 people), $4 for single person in vehicle, $2 for pedestrian/bicyclist).

Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to park, and take the tram down to the gazebo, to make the class on time - the trams to the beach depart at 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m.

"Holding the yoga classes on the gazebo means that our attendees don't get sand on their mats and don't get sand all over themselves," Williams said. "The surface of the gazebo is conducive for balancing poses and the gazebo offers shade so that we are not in the full sunshine."

FOLKS has partnered with Naples Yoga Center to offer this very Fort Myers Beach special yoga experience. Naples Yoga Center has always been committed to providing high quality and affordable Yoga for everyone. Join their talented instructor Sandy McShane for an hour of Open Vinyasa Flow (multilevel) and discover the magic of open air yoga.

"Sandy has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 30 years," Williams said. "As a Registered Nurse her extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology provides a safe and inviting space for both novice and intermediate students."

Adults of all levels of fitness can participate, bring a yoga mat, water, and an open mind.

"Practicing yoga with the beach as the setting is amazing as the sunshine, the blue skies and the sound of the waves lapping on the beach makes a yoga class even more special," Williams said. "Many indoor classes use the sounds of the ocean as background music - here on the beach in nature we have these sounds naturally."

Not just for body and soul but participation also helps to fund the future Welcome and Discovery Center at the park, as a portion of the class fee will be donated to FOLKS.

"My favorite part of any yoga class is the shivasana (resting pose) at the end of class," Williams said. "In this class laying still, listening to the sounds of the waves hit the beach, the calls of the birds, and drifting off is my blissful place."
