TPI- a whale in the fishpond

To the Editor:

I don't understand all the support for the TPI proposal. As a business owner, I guess I might support it, but I try to visualize the details. When I talk to supporters, I don't hear much detail except they (including me) wish the Downtown to look better and the Plaza to have vitality. That's about it. Lost in this support is how this proposal actually fits into the core. Those of us who are raising concerns are not against redevelopment- but we also know we have a Comp Plan and Land Development Code designed to create a certain scale in new development. TPI requires a revisionist approach to density, has 65 foot buildings, from the ground up, on all streetscapes and offers an urban solution in a barrier island setting. It is only a good plan if maximizing development is your goal. TPI could easily have suggested a more modest plan that offers more architectural interest, more open space, no trashing of Crescent Street and modest deviations in density, height, number of floors and Floor Area Ratio and effective parking solutions. It is a fortress and way out of scale with our entire core. I urge the Town Council and Citizens to look at the details. We deserve better- a mistake will be a terrible legacy for all of us to live with.
