Not happy with party-line politics

July 31, 2019
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

I am a constituent of Rep. Francis Rooney and his vote against the resolution to hold Attorney General Barr and Secretary Ross in contempt is disappointing to say the least, as are the all the nay votes. To me, it is a clear violation of his oath to uphold and defend the Constitution.

A valid subpoena must be complied with and Congress needs to support the rule of law above all. Through this vote, as well as other recent along-party-lines votes, Rep. Rooney has shown his willingness to subvert his Oath of Office to almost blind loyalty to the President. This vote is also a clear indication that Rep. Rooney is willing to weaken our system of checks and balances in favor of a reckless Administration, even to the extent of rendering the Congressional body in which he serves as powerless as possible.

As a registered Republican voter in a heavily Republican District, I sincerely hope that Mr. Rooney has a viable primary challenger the next time he runs for office.
